Introduction to Augmentative and Alternative Communication.


What’s this workshop about?

This workshop is a great introduction for anyone starting off to use or consider using non spoken methods of communication such as signing, pointing and communication tools such as Ipad and voice output devices. Being a great communication partner using spoken and non spoken communication can be challenging but very rewarding. So come along and find out how to best help someone who needs your assistance to help their potential and existing skills be seen.

What is included in this workshop?

  • · To Sign or not to Sign
  • · Designing Communication Displays, including adding low tech to your high tech and I-Pad.
  • · Visual Communication
  • · Development of Speech
  • · Communication Partner Training

From this learning event, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss why AAC needs to be multimodal
  • Demonstrate how to use a communication display for conversation
  • List considerations when not being able to communicate
  • · Explain the different types of AAC available today

Who can come along?

The workshop is ideal for parents, teachers, teacher aides and therapists.

The Presenter:

Jane Remington-Gurney is a speech language pathologist with thirty years experience working with people who have developmental or acquired disabilities. She has worked in several countries and has had the opportunity to work with many very skilled parents, support workers, teachers and allied health professionals. Jane illustrates her workshops with examples of how the theory can be put into practice and has a publication to accompany each of her workshops. Jane was awarded the Master Trainer Award at the recent Inclusion Conference held at Syracuse University, NY, USA in July 2009.

Cost:   $60 per person with additional cost of $30 for those people who would like the manual which accompanies this training.

When: 9.00am to 4pm
